TO-DAY'S TURF.

MISS LU WINS CUP

HURDLES TO MERY LAP.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

WHANGAREI, this day.

The weather is fine, but threatening, for the opening day of the Whangarei Racing Club's spring carnival, commenced at Kensington Park to-day. There is a large crowd present. The track is a bit on the soft side.

Scratchings reduced the field for the Spring Plate to eleven starters and Valrent was installed favourite, with Tidalia second in demand, while Gay Rebel and Orefield were at good prices. British Jewel failed to jump away and was badly left. Te Wara was showing out from Lady Mabs, Tidalia and Orefield. Along the back Te Wara was followed by Orefield, Tidalia, Gold Musk, Lady Mabs and High Quality, there being not much difference between them. Te Wara was still m command entering the top stretch, followed by High Quality, Tidalia, Valrent, Orefield, Lady Mabs and Gold Musk. Valrent was first to turn for home, followed by Te Wara, High Quality, Orefield, Tidalia and Lady Mabs. Valrent stalled off challenges by Gay Rebel, Orefield and Tidalia, and went on to win by a head from Gay Rebel, who was a short head in front of Orefield, with Tidalia close up. Then came Gold Musk, Valise, Bayora and High Quality. Surprise By Teddy Boy. Tidalia was the only defection from the Hikurangi Hack Handicap, for which Enlightenment was made favourite, while Lady Diana and Impellant were next in demand. Lady Diana led round past the stand from Impellant, La Femme Noire, Enlightenment, Teddy Boy and Te Broney. There was not much change along the back, except that Teddy Boy had moved into third place. Lady Diana was still in charge across the top and into the straight from Impellant, Te Broney, Teddy Boy and Enlightenment. In a great finish Teddy Boy got the decision by a head from I Enlightenment, who beat Lady Diana by a short head. Impellant was right up fourth, and then came Te Broney and La Femme Noire. Favourite Wins Hurdles. Huskie was the only scratching. Merry Lap was favourite, Orenda being at a good price. Orenda was slow to move and Tea Chat led over the first hurdle from Merry Lap, Hawthorn and Blue Bonnet, but about 100 yards further on Lap Up lost his rider. Merry Lap led past the stand from Tea Chat, Blue Bonnet, Sur Vanna and Orenda, Hawthorn falling near the judge's box. Tea Chat and Merry Lap were on terms along the back, with Orenda, Sur Vanna and Blue Bonnet following. Merry Lap was first into the straight from Tea Chat, Orenda and Blue Bonnet, Sur Vanna having pulled up crossing the top. Merry Lap went on to win by two length? and a half from Orenda, who beal Tea Chat by four lengths. Then came Blue Bonnet. The Cup. Monanui, Gay Broney and Miss Lu were best backed for the Whangarei Cup, for which Baroscope, Green Patch, Gay Cockade and Whakapara were scratched. When they settled down Gay Broney, Miss Lu, Bonny Gay aiid Bush Lawyer were in front, but into the straight the first time Mies Lu had drawn clear. Past the stand Miss Lu. Bronze Tray and Monanui were racing almost on icrms, followed !y Gay Broney and Bush Lawyer. There was not much change round the back, and the order along the top was Miss Lu, Gay Broney, Bonny Gay, Bronze Tray, Monanui and Bush Lawyer. They turned for home in that order.. Gay Broney ran up to Miss Lu half-way down the straight, and in a good finish Mis-; Lu stayed on to get the decision j by a long from Gay Broney, with Bonny Gay two lengths and a half further back. Then came Bush Lawyer, Monanui and Bronze Tray. The County. Monanui and Tama-a-Tliaipa were the only withdrawals from the County Handicap. When the field settled down j along . the back the order was Gold Pocket, Lady Appellant, Dayform, Olivette, Royal Potoa, Marnui and Lady Bonnie. Across the top Gold Pocket was in front from Lady Appellant, Day-1 form, Royal Potoa, Olivette and Marnui. Along the back Landlubber led from Te Hai, Express, Ballvmoney, -Sellkyrian, Abbey Feale and Racctte. There was not much change as they entered the straight and Landlubber and Bellkyrian were lighting it out when Ballymoney joined in and Racetto came up fast on the outside. Express was also well in the picture. It was a great finish and the judge's verdict was in favour of Ballymoney by a short head from Racette, who just failed to beat Ballymoney in the last stride.
