EVERYBODY WON.
HANDICAPPER'S ERROR. LONDON, October 23. '-.'-A mistake by a handicapper—the worst for 20 years, and one that under the rules of racing could not be rectified —enabled the whole county of Berkshire to reap a. harvest. A Wolverhampton fishmonger, owner of the horse, told all his friends who liad previously won on Crawley Wood to keep their winnings for a future date. It was a long wait, occasioned by the illness of the horse, who was then handicapped 351b underweight, the handicapper confessing that he had confused him with another horse.
Crawley Wood started at 100 to 30 on, the bookmakers gambling on something to turn up to save the handicapper, although experts estimated that the proper price was 10 to 1 on.
Crawley Wood won by three lengths, strolling home. The handicapper said, "I am sorry for the error, particularly as this is my last meeting."
