WORK FOR 40,000.
CHALLENGE TO DISPROVE.
MR. CLARK AT BIRKENHEAD.
An attentive hearing was given Mr. W. J. H. Clark, Democrat candidate for Auckland Suburbs, by an audience of about 70 people at the Buffalo Hall, Birkenhead, last night. Mr. R. H. Greville presided.
Mr. Clark challenged anyone to disprove his statement that employment would be found for 40,000 men within twelve months at an annual cost of £450,000, the interest on £6,500,000. This .would, not: involve any additional cosit to the taxpayers, for "it would be paid : out of unemployment levy. The Government lia'd failed in its attempts to ■grapple with the unemployment problem and now it was asking for still another chance. The Labour party, which stood definitely for socialism, could not carry out the national development scheme which the Democrats planned, for socialism did not recognise private enterprise.
Attacking the pegging of the exchange Mr. Clark said rich ■ Hawke's Bay farmers, who had been able to store their wool for two seasons, had reaped a windfall and the wage earner helped to put into their pockets something which they never should have been given. To give a section of the community a benefit of £9,500,000 had cost the country £30,000,000.
