ALLEGED OPIUM DEN.
POLICE RAID IN CITY. NINE CHINESE ARRESTED. As the result of a raid carried out yesterday afternoon by Detective-Ser-geant A. G. McHugh, Detective Davis and Constable Fuller, on a house in Nelson Street, nine Chinese were arrested on charges relating to the possession of opium. Eight were arrested in the house, while another was taken into custody in the city.
The police party had to force a door of the four-roomed dwelling in order to' enter. The premises were carefully searched and a quantity of opium and opium-smoking utensils seized. The men submitted quietly to arrest.
They were brought before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court this morning. Wong Sun (30), Wong Wall (40), Chang Wong (31), Ah Wong (50), Ah Hung > (39), Ah Slium (36), Kwok Hing (40), Ah Lee (32) and Chan Fun (48) were each charged with being found unlawfully in possession of prepared opium and with being found on the premises while they were being used for the purpose of smoking opium. Ah Lee was further charged with that being the occupier, he did permit the premises to be used for the smoking of opium. On the application of Mr. J. J. Sullivan, who appeared for most of the men, and Mr. Norris, who appeared for one defendant, the accused were remanded to appear rn Tuesday next. In each case bail was renewed'.
