PERSONAL TRIUMPH.
M. Laval in French Senate Elections. IMPORTANCE OF POLL. PARIS, October 21. M. Laval, the Premier, had a personal triumph in the Senate elections. He was succcssful in the first ballot for two seats, from which he will choose later. Other prominent men re-elected on the first ballot were the Minister of Justice, M. Beraud, MM. Millerand and Caillaux, also the Radical ex-Premier, M. Steeg. Two Communists were unexpectedly elected—Alexandre Bachelet and Marcel Cacliin. The latter is a director of the Communist newspaper "Humanite," and is an ex-leader of the Communist Deputies.
The elections were held to fill 107 seats in the Senate, one-tliird of which are elected every three years. The international situation lent exceptional importance to the poll, which is still incomplete.
The state of parties thus far is as follows, the figures in parentheses being the party strength in the last Senate: — Independents 2 (2) Conservatives 1 (2) ■ Centre 21 (25) Left Centre 14 (10) Radicals 30 (51) Orthodox Socialists .. 9(6) Other Socialists ..... 3 (5) Communists 2 (0)
