WAIKATO TROTS.
THE SPRING MEETING., WILLIE DERBY SURPRISES. KING'S GUIDE WINS FAREWELL. The spring meeting of the Waikato Trotting Club was concluded at Claudelands yesterday in fine weather. There ■was a fair attendance, and the course was in good order. The totalisator handled the sum of £5559 10/, making a total for the two days of £13,175 10/. The club only raced on one day last spring. -» After the running of the President's Handicap the judicial committee held an inquiry regarding the mishap to Silver Watch /when the field had covered about six furlongs. The evidence was to the effect that Silver Watch shied while racing in front and veered out slightly from the rails, with the result that Luminate, who was following closely, struck one of his sulky wheels and caused it to collapse. The committee decided to take no action.
Subsequent to the. running of the Eureka Handicap, G. Phipps, driver of Nelson d© Oro, was cautioned by the judicial committee for crossing Supertax too quickly going out' of the straight. King's Play Improves. Tryment failed to keep her engagement in the Kaipaki Handicap, and most supporTT' was accorded Bonny Azure, King's Play and Parochial. Bonny Azure broke at the start and lost a good deal of ground, and when they settled down Parochial was showing the way to King's Play and Kewpie's Crest. Parochial was still in "charge passing the stands from King's Play, Kewpie's Crest, Red Frontier, Phyllis Axworthy and Bonny Azure. Parochial and King's Play were practically on terms as they raccd along the back, this pair being three lengths ahead of Red Frontier, Kewpie's Crest, Phyllis Axworthy and Bonny Azure. There was no change into the straight, but once straightened up. King's Play came away to beat Red Frontier by a length, with Kewpie's Crest a similar distance away. Parochial was fourth, with Phyllis Axworthy and Bonny Azure next. . > The Open Sprint. . , . The Eureka Handicap saw all acceptors start and the best backed were Supertax, Edna Worthy and Logan's Pride, but the little fancied Willie Derby won and returned over double figures. Edna Worthy broke at the start and lost a lot of ground' and Supertax led out from Nelson de Oro,'Travis and Logan's Pride, but Nelson de Oro then ran through to the front and led past the stands from Supertax, Willie Derby, Travis, Logan's Pride and Our Peter. There was little between Nelson de Oro, Supertax and Willie Derby along the back and Supertax and Willie Derby turned into the straight together a shade ahead of Logan's Pride, Nelson de Oro and Travis. Willie Derby finished best to win by half a length from Supertax, who was a length clear of Travis. Logan's Pride was fourth; then came Lady Coronado, Nelson de Oro, Edna Worthy and Our Peter. A Small Field. In another small field for the Stewards' Handicap the favourites were Eockella and War Officer. Luminate, Rockella, Silver Watch and War Officer were in that order when they settled down and they raced in close attendance all the way, and there- was nothing between the four horses as the' field turned for home. A great finish ensued and Rockella got up to beat Luminate by a, neck, with War Officer only another ncck away and Silver Watch fourth.
The Saddle Event. The meeting concluded with the Farewell Handicap, in which, most money came for General Sarsfield, Tryment and King's Guide. Our McKinney and Alexis were slow Grey Mist took up the running from Nelson Luvan, General Sarsfield, King's Guide and Tryment. Grey Mist was still showing the way along the back, lier nearest attendants at this stage being General Sarsfield, Nelson Luvan and King's Guide, with Tryment beginning to make a run next. Tryment headed Grey Mist across the top, and led into the straight from King's Guide, Grey Mist and General Sarsfield. Staying on solidly King' 3 Guide went on to beat Tryment by half a length, with General Sarsfield threequarters of a length away third. Our McKinney, Grey Mist and Alexis were next to finish. As,the field turned for home Nelson Luvan fell.
