SECRETARIES' INSTITUTE. ANNUAL CONVENTION OPENS. A proposal for the official registration of secretaries of public companies in order to ensure \a standard of qualification was the major matter discussed at the fourth annual convention of the New- Zealand Institute of Secretaries which was opened in Auckland yesterday. It is pointed out that recently the Chartered Institute of Secretaries in England took steps in a similar direction. _ It was recognised that the administration of companies was becoming more complex each year, and as a result it was felt that there was an increasing need for qualified control.
Delegates attending include Mr. E. A. Wallace, president (Wellington) and members of the council, Mr. .J. AnnandSmitli, Wellington; Mr. G. N. Boulton, Wanganui; Mr. A. E. G. Lyttlo, Christchurch; Mr. A. G. Valentine. Dunedin; the Hon. G. J. Garland, Mr. W. M. Barton, Mr. D. L. Bone, Mr. J. A. Shcrriff and Mr. D. G. Commons, Auckland.
The members' session commenced today with a lunch at Alilne and Choyrc's reception hall, when Mr. W. M. Barton, secretary of the Auckland Stock Exchange, gave ail address 011 "The Stock Exchange and the Secretary."
This afternoon there will be a motor drive, and that will be followed by the annual general meeting.
The annual dinner will take placc this evening at Hotel Cargen.
_ Several important matters in connection with the secretarial profession will be discussed, and reports and papers presented by the various representatives of the chapters of the institute.
Coincident with the convention, the institute's examinations are being held during the week throughout .the Dominion. A large number of candidates have entered.
