APPRENTICE TRAINING. TECHNICAL COLLEGE VIEW. "I will say this definitely; the board will not be a party to any interference with apprenticeship arrangements, and we will not do anything against the strong wishes of the employers. We will not interfere between employers and employees," said Mr. J.. A- C. Allum, chairman of the Seddon Memorial lechm'cal College Board, yesterday, referring to a comment by a member that the proposal to establish a girls' trades school was regarded with anxiety bv the trades unions.
The board adopted a report by a special sub-committee recommending that it was desirable that facilities for training girls for domestic scrvice and various occupations should be established in Auckland. It was stated that the proposal would probably be for the establishment of a hostel, which eventually would be self-supporting. All that finances would allow at the beginning would be the training of girls for domestic scrvice. If, however, arty particular trade should be anxious to have training given, and was prepared to subsidise it heavily, extension of the courses would be considered.
Miss, B. E. Carnachan said that the committee should take some definite action with regard to the .proposals and should be prepared to back it financially.
Mr. G. J. Park explained that the question of financial assistance was bound up with the Department's regulations. The committee should first explore every avenue of the question and bring down something definite in the nature of a scheme. This could then be submitted to the Education Department, and the Unemployment Board for their approval and financial backing.
This view was supported by other members, and it was decided. to leave the matter in the hands of the special committee to bring down definite proposals, which would then be submitted to the Education Department and the Unemployment Board.
Miss Carnachan pointed out that the committee had already had an application for the training of girls for shirt factory work.
