HELD UP AND ROBBED.
WAYLAID ON LONELY ROAD. COLLECTOR LEFT UNCONSCIOUS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Sunday. A daylight hold-up in which £50 was stolen from Mr. James O'Neill, a collector for the Wellington Gas Company, was carried out in a lonely part of the road between Lyall Bay and Houghton Bay about 11 o'clock on Saturday morning. Two men stopped a motor car Mr. O'Neill was driving and attacked him. He was then left unconscious on theroadside, the assailants making off in the car, which contained the money. Mr. O'Neill was semi-conscious when picked up by a passing motorist a little later. His car was recovered in the afternoon abandoned in Sutherland Road, Melrose. In response to the urgent signals of one of the men, said Mr. O'Neill, he stopped and immediately both men clambered into the car. He was struck on the head several times and was then carried to the side of the road. H!is assailants then made off in the car. The whole affair took less than a minute. The assault took place on a part of the road on which motoriets ars seldom seen except on holidays. On this occasion was completely deserted.
