HURRICANE DAMAGE.
100-m.p.h. Gale Sweeping Over Scotland. SHIPS IN DISTRESS. LONDON, October 20. I Widespread damage has been caused by a hurricane which swept across Scotland at 100 miles an hour. Rivers are swollen and telephone poles have been blown down. Many vessels are in difficulties in the North Sea and several ships are aground on the Dutch coast. Eight vessels are racing to the rescue of 45 members of the crew of the steamer Vardulia (5735 tons), who have been compelled to abandon their ship and take to the boats 600 miles northwest of the Hebrides. The ship was bound for Newfoundland. Residents of the Cumberland village of Bootle rescued, by means of a breeches buoy, 25 members of the crew of the Finnish steamer Esbo (3128 tons), which was driven aground. The storm j defeated efforts to use the lifeboat. Motor craft were wrecked in the River Clyde and a cyclist, blinded by the storm, and a pedestrian were killed in accidents in Glasgow. The northern air service has been cancelled and liners are unable to call at Belfast. Minor damage was done in England. The wind derailed a Manchester-Carlisle goods train. Further galea are predicted.
