GIRLS ON PARADE.
ANNUAL SPORTS DAY. AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION. SUCCESS OF HEARD'S TEAM. Auckland's most spectacular and colourful athletic event was held .at Carlaw Park on Saturday, when upwards of 400 girls, drawn from 21 business houses and organisations, competed in the tenth annual sports conducted by the Auckland Girls' Athletic Association. The meeting was productive of the keenest of competition, and finally the representatives of Heard's, Ltd., emerged as the premier team in the A section, beating last year's winners, Arawa Sports Club, by the convincing margin of 22 points. Heard's team performed consistently throughout the day, and annexed the Grand Challenge Cup for highest aggregate of points, the Kolm Challenge Cup for team events and the Shearer Challenge Cup for single events. The Arawa Sporte Club, which has'been the leading team for a number of seasons, ■ was also prominently in the picture and carried off several trophies.
In the B section —a division inaugurated this year to encourage the weaker teams of former years and new clubs— the principal honours went to t)earsley's team, while a new team representing the Cambridge Clothing Company, did well to win the Gates Challenge Cup for most points in team events. Evidence of Careful Training. The einootlmeiis with which the teams were marshalled and the fielde were dispatched bore testimony .to the careful training that the competitors have been putting in for weeks past. The most popular and effective features of an altogether brilliant display were the march past and the. massed drill displays, in which all the competitors figured. To the accompaniment of stirring music the teams paraded round the oval with the representatives of St. Peter's Anglican Club, Onehunga, in the lead. With heads erect, arme and legs working in tune to the music, the girls presented a wonderful picture of healthy young New Zealand womanhood. Next the teams assembled for the massed drill display, and this perhaps produced the finest sight of all. With nothing more than the blaets of a whistle to guide them, the girls executed many difficult physical exercises. Not only did the intermingling of colours produce a very bright scene, but it was noticeable that each movement —the upward swinging of arms or a sideways bend—was carried out with perfect timing.
