WAIKATO TROTS.
SPRING MEETING. i ■ THE OPENING 3>AY. GOLD DREDGE WINS CHIEF EVENT. The spring meeting of the Wnikato Trotting Club commenced at Claudelands on Saturday in fine though, overcast •weather. There was a fair attendance, and the course was in good order. During the day the sum of £7616 was put through the machine, compared with !£9292 for the corresponding day last season, a decrease of £1676. Lea All The Way. King's Warrior, Silver Watch and Gold Dredge were fancied in that order for the Tamahere Handicap, the chief event of the day, for which Kewpie's King and Lady Fame were scratched. Silver Watch, broke at the start and lost a bit of ground, while Rare Rey was slow away. Gold Dredge was the pilot passing the stands, from Bonnie Direct, Luminate, Silver Watch, King's Warrior and Rare Rey. Silver Watch and King's Warrior had improved their positions by the time they came round again, and at the home turn Gold Dredge was followed by Silver Watch, King's Warrior, Lnminate, Bonnie Direct and Rare Rey. Gold Dredge went on to win by a length and a half from King's Warrior, who' beat Silver Watch, by two lengths and a half. Then, came Luminate, Bonnie Direct and Rare Rey. The trophy, a silver tea and coffee service, was presented to Mrs. G. McGregor, owner of the winner, by Sir Alexander Young.
Never Seriously Troubled* Bonnie Azure was favourite for the Claudelands Handicap, with King's Play and Parochial next best supported. Red Prontier refused to leave the niark, and though he eventually went- away he was so far behind that his task was hopeless. King's Play also lost several lengths at the start. Bonnie Azure was soon in command' from Parochial, Kewpie's Crest and King's Play, and passing the stands there was little alteration, except that Kewpie's Creat had run up second. He held his position till the straight was reached, the last time, but then tired, and Bonnie Azure went on to ecore by a length and a half from Parochial, who beat King's. Play by four lengths. Kewpie's Crest was three lengths further back. Another to Takanini. The Takanini-trained Travis was favourite both ways for the Tβ Kowhai Handicap, while Logan's Pride and iiady Coronado had most friends of the others engaged. Travis began best from Neleon de Oro, Logan's Pride and Our Peter, while Lady Coronado was very slow away and was always a long way back. Passing the stands Nelson de- Orq was just in front of Travis while Logan's Pride and Our Peter were next. . Travis headed Nelson de Oro along the back, but Logan's Pride was just behind them, ■with Our Peter two lengths away. The order -was the same at the home turn and Travis, held on to win by half a length from Logan's Pride, who beat Our Peter by a neck. Nelson de Oro was three lengths further back. A,Very Easy Victory. Peter Junior, whose name was included in. the original acceptance list for the Ruakura Handicap and was not included in the race card, and therefore did not appear in the "Star" acceptance list on ITriday, was among the starters for the event and he was installed a warm favourite, while Silver Watch and Transworthy were next best backed. Peter Junior and Silver Watch were first to show out. Luminate and Transworthy dwelt on the mark, and War Officer ran into them. Passing the stands Peter Junior was a long way in front of War Officer, who was followed by Silver Watch, but the latter was breaking. Luminate was tailed off, while Red Hope's gear broke and he was pulled up. Going out of the straight Transworthy was also pulled up. . Peter Junior was about twenty lengths clear of War Officer and Luminate along the back, while Silver Watch was still tangling. Peter Junior was well clear of War Officer at the home turn and went on to win by ten lengths, from War Officer, who beat Luminate by a couple of lengths. Silver Watch was fourth. .
The Concluding Event. The programme concluded with, the Visitors' Handicap, a saddle event run over a mile* General Sarsfield, Tryment and Our McKinneyi were tie favourites on the win machine, but on the place machine Nelson Luvan, Tryment and General Sarsfield carried most money. . Passing the stands General Sarsfield. was in charge from Nelson Luvan, Tryment, Alexis, King's Guide, Grey Mist and Our McKinney, who tangled badly at the start and lost a lot of ground. Along the back General Sarsfield was attended by Alexis, Nelson Luvan, Tryment and King's. Guide. Tryment then ran to the front and led across the top from General Sarsfield, Alexis, Guide and Nelsdji Luvan. There was no change.at the home turn, and in the run to the judge Tryment did best to win by a head from ■ General Sarsfield, who beat King's Guide by two lengths. Then came Alexis, Nelson Luvan and Our McK'jiney. The winner was ridden by Mr. Martin H. Tims, who is well known in racing circles as the owner of Te Kara, and who at present races Kahapa.
