NEW WAGES LEVEL.
ENGINE DRIVERS , PROTEST. MEETING IN AUCKLAND. A further protest has been made by the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Engine Drivers, Firemen and Cleaners' Association against the "real" wages for civil servants proposed by the Government. The association considers itself to be in a worse position than before the first announcement of the restoration of the 7J per cent cut. A resolution to that effect was passed yesterday at a largely attended meeting of the association. After making the protest, the resolution added as explanation: "Our worse position is due to increased retail prices, for which retrospective pay from August 1 does not compensate. We contend that owing to the rapid rise in prices, due particularly to the war situation, the only just method of computing wages is on the figures of retail prices to ensure that the living standard does not fall."
