BANK INTEREST RATES.
DISCUSSION IN AUSTRALIA. NO CHANGE PROPOSED. Following informal discussions, the trading banks of A ictoria have decided for the present not to change interest rates on deposits or overdrafts. tl is considered that the situation is becoming more nearly normal than it was a few years ago when deposits largely exceeded advances, and that there is as yet no urgent necessity to interfere with the natural course of events. The demand for bank accommodation is steadily increasing, but money is not being made freely available for speculative enterprises. It is asserted, however, that all the reasonable requirements of credit of worthy clients are being supplied at present without difficulty. The position, is being carefully watched, and action will be taken only when the principles of prudent banking show that the necessity exists for an adjustment of the rates.
