"NOT WITH LABOUR." MR. HISLOP IS EMPHATIC. NO CONFIDENCE VOTE (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON', this day. Hie leader of the Democrat party, Mr. J. C. A. wHislop, who opened his campaign last night for the Masterton seat, was asked how he would vote in the House in the event of the Labour party moving a no-confidence motion, which, jf carried, would have the effect of placing the Labour party in office. "I would not vote to place the Labour party in power," replied Mr. Hislop. A Voice: Then you will vote with the Government. Mr. Hislop: No. If Labour moves an amendment I will move a further amendment and make the Labour party follow nie. This reply was received with some laughter from the back of the lmll. Another question was whether Mr. Hislop would favour a system of preferential voting. Mr. Hislop: Most certainly. I have always advocated preferential voting, and it is a definite plank in our platform. In the first session, after our return, I will bring in a preferential voting bill. (Applause.) Replying to other questions Mr. Hislop said he would not countenance any extension of the life of Parliament beyond the four years now provided for. MID-CANTERBURY SEAT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) ASIIBURTON, this day. Mr. J. W. M. Dart, who was selected on Friday as the National candidate for Mid-Canterbury, has notified headquarters here that, owing to business reasons, he is unable to accept nomination.
