TINTERN ABBEY.

Tintern Abbey, in Monmonthsliirc, was founded for the Cistercians by Walter Fitzßichard, Lord of Striguil, 011 May 9, 1131. It is four miles north of Chepstow, on the banks of the Wye According to the Consuetudines, it must have consisted of at least a church, a frater, a dorter, a guest house, and a porter's lodge. A general enlargement was begun about 1220.
