PUBLIC WORKS.
STANDARD RATES.
KAURI POINT NAVAL DEPOT.
HOBSONVILIiE AIR BASE.
Preliminary work for the establish, ment of a naval depot at Kauri Point is to start immediately and men are now being drafted to that area. Additional men are also being signed on for Hobsonville air base, where improvements to the landing ground are to be accelerated.
These undertakings arc part of the new programme of public works on which it is anticipated some thousands of men will be engaged in the Auckland district in the near future on standard rates of pay.
A gratifying response has already been made to the inquiry form recently issued to men asking whether they would be willing to accept full-time work at standard rates, probably in country districts.
About 500 men will be needed to carry out the first part of the programme including the Kauri Point development and the Hobsonville work, as well as road improvements in most of the counties in the Auckland district. .Already 850 men have stated that they arc willing to accept tl. is type of work.
Work on county roading schemes will start as soon as the arrangements for the employment of men and their accommodation are completed.
