TEMPERANCE ISSUE.
PRESBYTERY VIEWPOINT.
WITHDRAWAL OF MOTION".
"Is thcro a temperance committee, and does it intend to give a lead at the coming poll?" asked the Rev. W. J. Connie at a meeting of the Auckland Presbytery last evening.
The reply was that temperance came under the control of the life and work committee.
"Since when?" asked the Rev. J. W. McKenzie. He expressed the opinion that it should be dealt with by the publie questions committee.
The Moderator, the Rev. T. N. Cuttle, said that two or three years ago the work of the life and work committee and temperance were merged.
Another speaker expressed the opinion that the temperance committee had lapsed.
Mr. McKenzie moved that a special committee should be appointed to deal with tempcrancc. He contended that the life and work committee had no jurisdiction. The Rev. W. Bower Black said that he did not think it necessary to appoint a committee, and if it was it was too late. They already had an alliance committee, and the proposal would only be wasting time and not carrying it any further than the work the present committee was doing. Mr. McKenzie said that there did not seem to be any enthusiasm for the motion, and he would not object to withdrawing it. The motion was withdrawn.
