SLACK COAL.
WASTED IN PAST.

GOVERNMENT 'TO PURCHASE,

WELLINGTON, this day
In various parts of New Zealand, and in the Waikato district in particular, large quantities of slack coal have, ill the past, been dumped because of the absence of a profitable market for such a product. These dumps, especially those in the Waikato, quickly catch lire as the result of spontaneous combustion, thus destroying a national asset. To avoid the scandalous waste which has occurred in the past it has been proposed that the Government should be empowered to purchase or acquire slack coal which is not required and to store it under water to prevent combustion.
The Coal Mines Amendment Bill, introduced in the House of Kepresentatives by Governor's Message this afternoon, is designed to achieve this purpose by vesting the necessary powers in the Minister of Mines.
