TAXICAB "WAR."
POSITION AT WHANGAREI. CONFERENCE TO BE CALLED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. "The position in this town is becoming farcical," said Mr. A. T. Brainsby at a meeting of the Borough Council last night when commenting upon the taxi "war," which has been in progress in Wliangarei for some months. The council agreed to a request made by nine taxi proprietors to convene a meeting of all taxi proprietors in order to discuss fares and the limitation of licenses. "We have the Northern Bus Company complaining that 011 account of restriction they are handicapped so that they cannot compete with the low taxi fares, and on the other hand we are told that those who are carrying on the competition are doing so by sweated labour with drivers working up to 18 and 20 hours a day," declared Mr. Brainsby.
