IMPROVED FINANCES.

THAMES HARBOUR BOARD. PAYMENTS OF RATES. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, Friday. The Thames Harbour Board met last evening, Mr. H. Lowe presiding. Accounts amounting to £1772 14/11 were passed, it being stated that they included all interest to October 1.

The secretary submitted a comparative Statement of rates levied and collected during the financial years from 1932 to 1935. The rates collected for the financial year ending September 30 last amounted to £2823, out of a total levy of £3786, or 74.5 G per cent. The previous year’s collections were: 1933-34, 68.9 per cent; 1932-33, 64 per cent; 1931-32, 59.54 per cent. The arrears of rates last year totalled £1278, as against £487 in 1931-32. The total collection last year was £4102 8/10. It was possible, stated the report, that there might be some adjustment between the current rates and arrears, but it would not materially affect the position. The sum required to pay interest at 4% per cent and sinking fund of 1 per cent totalled £3169 5/.

Members considered the financial position satisfactorj-. The secretary stated that it would be necessary for legislalation to be enacted before April authorising the board to pay 414 per cent interest unless conversion was effected in the meantime. . A confidential report-on the proceedings at the recent conference at Wellington in connection with the proposed amalgamation was submitted by Messrs. H. Lowe and H. 11. Hicks, and received without discussion. The application of M. M. P. Lysnar for permission to utilise a small portion of the foreshore for pegging out purposes in connection with a deep level development scheme was approved. The Unemployment Board notified that relief workers employed on clerical and other similar work were not exempt from the emergency unemployment charge, but. that where the amount received by such workers did not exceed the amount pay-, able for manual labour such amounts were | not considered wages.
