NAVAL SELECTIONS.
100 PER CENT NEW ZEALAND. POSSIBILITY DISCUSSED. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Friday. The great rush of young New Zealanders for positions in the Navy was described by Mr. Cobbe, Minister of Defence, during discussion of the Navy estimates in the House of Representatives. There were 680 applications, ho said, for ten vacancies, mid when they wanted 15 boys 620 applied. Answering Mr. W. E. Barnard, Labour member for Napier, the Minister said the question was being considered by the naval authorities as to whether they could have what practically amounted to 100 per cent of New Zealand ratings in future. They were not going to get that all at once, but a high officer in the Navy Juul told him that New Zealanders were particularly good men.
Air. Barnard: What sort of naval officers do they make? The Alinister: We have not many New Zealand officers, but they are satisfactory, and we expect to have a considerable increase in a short time. The Alinister also mentioned that a number of naval ratings were being trained in England in the air service.
Hi reply to members, Air. Cobbe said young men in other parts of New Zealand were to have the same opportunity as Aucklanders.
