AUCKLAND ELECTORATES. WARNING BY REGISTRAR. “In the nine electorates round Auckland as many as 3000 names have been struck off the roll since the last elections,”. said Mr. F. Evans, registrar of electors, when asked to comment on the report that many eligible voters are not on the roll. “The total number of people struck off the rolls would amount to many thousands owing to a big move in population in the last four years. Mr. Evans said that the system followed by his department was to write to an elector to inquire if he was still at his old address. If no reply was forthcoming, a second letter, which was registered, was sent to him and the postal authorities were asked to make special efforts to trace the recipient. If the registered letter came back marked “Gone, address unknown,” then the elector was automatically struck off the roll. Some hundreds of these registered letters have been returned to the registrar of electors in the past few months. However, in recent weeks political and licensing organisations had been very active canvassing streets and houses, and applications were beginning to pour in. There was also a rush at the electoral counters.
Mr. Evans pointed out that copies of the roll could be seen at post offices, libraries and shops at main points. The last opportunity of enrolling cannot yet be given, but at the last elections it was some time in November.
