TWO BORED PERSONS.
(Half-crown prize to Monica .Matheson, 1-4, Victoria Road, Devonport, Auckland, N.I; age 17.)
The young man was very bored. He had arranged with some pals to spend the day hiking,„but the pale had not turned up at the appointed place, although the young man had waited for half an hour. So he. set forth alone upoif'the winding road. The sun beamed down upon him and the light breeze fanned his cheeks with reminders of spring, but lie paid no heed to them, for lie was very bored and disgusted with things in general. The old man was bored, too. His pack seemed unaccountably heavier t lis morning. He was beginning to feel his age and’ he did not like the prospect. He wanted to be away across the flying blue ocean of his youth, sailing the Seven Seas, instead of trudging along this weary road. The frisky lambs in the fields had no joy for him; he was a mariner born and bred and he longed for a glimpse of the dancing waters. The young man's long strides easily overtook the slow steps of his equallybored companion' on the road. Some impulse caused him to relieve the elder man of his load and to fall into step beside him. They spoke of the glorious weather; of the scarce likelihood of in in; of the pleasant country through which they travelled; and then of
