CLOSE OF LONDON SALES. MERINOS TO JULY LEVELS. (Received 11 a.m.) LONDON, October 4. At the wool sales 5992 bales were offered, including 1814 New Zealand. About 4540 Australian and New Zealand were sold. New Zealand greasy halfbreds, made 10%d; greasy crossbreds, top price 9%d, average B%d. Although the series opened poorly' the need for immediate supplies brought Merinos to July levels at the close. Crossbreds were unable to maintain their position. An excellent selection was absorbed, principally by Home buyers supported by the Continent, which displayed greater interest. Compared with July closing, Merinos, greasy super style spinner, advanced 5 per cent, top-making fleeces par. Scoureds and bulky, helped by Russian and Continental competition, advanced 5 per cent; smaller scoureds receded par to 5 per cent, crossbreds declined, fine and medium 5 to 10 per cent, slipes recovered par. The total catalogue was 134.178 bales. Sold: Home 63,500. Continent 48.500. Held 68,000. Total sales of Australian were 54,000 and of New Zealand 50,000. The Bank’s Report.
The Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice from its London office, under date of 4th instant: — The sales have closed firm for all kinds of wool- with an active demand by all branches of the trade. Current quotations—New Zealand: Greasy Merino’s, super, 60-64’s, 15d to 16d per lb; ordinary, 60-64's, 13%d to 14d; inferior 60-64’s, lid to ll%d; halfbreds, 56-58’s ll%d to 12%d, 56's 10%d to ll%d, 50-56’s 9d to, 9%d; crossbreds, 50’s B’/id to B%d, 48-50 s 7%d to B%d. 46-48's 7%d to 7%d, 44-46’s 7d to 7%d, 40-44’s 6%d to 7d, 36-40’s 6%d to o%d. All good average condition.
The New Zealand Loan and Agency Company' are in receipt of the following cable from their London office, under date October 4:—The sales closed with a fairly' firm tone to-day. As compared with last sale’s closing rates prices are %d to Id per lb higher for greasy Merino super, medium scoured crossbred and coarse scoured crossbred; par to %d per lb higher for scoured Merino super, crossbred slipe and greasy Merino medium; par to %d per lb lower for scoured Merino inferior, fine scoured crossbred and coarse greasy crossbred; %d to Id per lb dower for medium and fine greasy' crossbred. Others unchanged.
