LIFE IN SAMOA.

INTEREST IN ELECTION.

ARCHITECTURE IMPROVING,

(From Our Own Correspondent.) APIA, September 19,

There is no news so far regarding the appointment of a new Administrator by the New Zealand Government. The decision is awaited with considerable interest.

The coming election of two European members for the Samoan Legislative Council takes place on Novcmler 1. It is not known at present whether tlie sitting members, Messrs. A. It. Cobcrof and 1. 11. Carrutliers, will stand again. The names of several other citizens are mentioned as probable candidates. Amongst the arrivals by the Maui Pomare arc Lance-Corporal Bower, of tlie Samoan Constabulary, and liis wife, and Mr. Adkins (Bank of New Zealand), who has returned to Samoa after several years' absence.

The well-known novelist and writer of South Sea stories, Miss Beatrice Grimsliaw, arrived by the Swedish steamer Anten from Tonga, where she has resided for the last few months, and is staying at the Casino Hotel. Miss Grimsliaw, who was v'n Apia last in 1903, comments favourably on the changes she linds, especially on Apia beach, where the architecture of many business houses and residential quarters is far more pleasing than that of the ramshackle buildings of 30 years ago. The Swedish steamer Anten called at Apia to load about ISOO tons of copra. Copra is still coming in very freely from the outside district and export figures should be considerably higher than for the last few years. The Maui Pomarc takes away a capacity cargo of bananas (over 7000 cases). The fruit is of excellent quality and should reach New Zealand in perfect condition.
