TAKAPUNA OPPOSED.

QUESTION OF EXPENSE. "STRONG HAND" ADVISED. "If \vc don't take a strong hand here and now legislation will be enacted and we may be drawn into the scheme whether we like it or not," said the Mayor Mr. J. Guiniven, in urging the Borough Council at a special meeting to oppose the inclusion of Takapuna in the proposed metropolitan drainage scheme. The Mayor of Auckland, Mr. Ernest Davis, had asked the council to report on the position of Takapuna.

"I would advise the council to take a strong hand in this affair," said the Mayor, "because 011 no account cotild we afford linking up with the scheme." He pointed out that so much money had been spent 011 Takapuna's up-to-date drainage and outfalls, which would have to be scrapped under the metropolitan scheme, that the inclusion of Takapuna should be strongly opposed.

It had been stated, said Mr. Guiniven, that the North Shore outfalls had a share in the pollution of the harbour, but he would advise the council to send to the authorities a strongly-worded protest, pointing out that the Takapuna outfall at least caused no pollution of the harbour. In Takapuna's present drainage system, moreover, added Mr. Guiniven, provision had been made for coping with the sewage of the whole of the North Shore district.

"I think we should tell the Mayor of Auckland that on no account will we take part in the metropolitan scheme/' said Mr. Guiniven.

The council decided to inform the Drainage Board of its opposition to the proposals.

NORTHCOTE OPINION,

INADEQUATE INFORMATION. The Northcbte Borough Council at its meeting last evening considered a memorandum from Mr. Ernest Davis, chairman of the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board, which outlined recent proposals regarding the outfall and other details in connection with the comprehensive metropolitan drainage scheme. It was decided to reply that there was insufficient information to enable the council to form an opinion and that there were- no proposals affecting the borough.
