GLOVE FIGHT.

LOUIS V. BAER.

Negro Knocks Ex-World Champion Boxer.

ENDING IN FOURTH ROUND,

'(United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 2.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 24. The long-expected heavy-weight boxing match between the Detroit negro, Joe Louis, and the ex-world champion, Max Baer, took place at Madison Square Garden to-night. The fight was short and decisive, Louis knocking out Baur in the fourth round. There were 90,000 spectators. ]>acr weighed 15st and Louis 14st 3ilb. The knock-out came after 2 minutes 50 seconds of the fourth round had elapsed. Baer was helpless, and on one knee, taking the count after a terrific boating in the third round when lie was saved by the gong. The decision was, however, only deferred for a round. Joe Louis, the Detroit negro boxer, is even moro a sensation of the boxing world than was Max Baer in his brief day from 1933 to 1935. In 1934 Baer won the world's heavy-weight title by his defeat of Camera; a year later he lost it to Ja«. J. Braddock —one of the grout surprise*; of the ring. In the meantime Louie, a young negro, now only 21 years of age, as against Baer's 26 years, jumped into prominence by winning the amateur championship, or Golden Gloves, competition at Chicago, and then, on turning professional, scoring a straight series of a dozen or more wins by knoek-oute. He sot the seal on his prowess this year by a technical knock-out win over Camera in quick time, and similarly defeating King Lcvineky in one round.

Baer is not considered a clever boxer, but he has a winning right-hand punch. Louis carries a knock-out punch in either hand, and, though not yet tested in defence, is considered a heady boxer in addition to being a hard'hitter.
