UNEMPLOYMENT FUND.
STRONG CRITICISM IN HOUSE,
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday.
The accumulation of a credit balance of £1,333,000 in the Unemployment Fund at a time when appeal after appeal was being made to the Government to assist the unemployed, was deplored by Mr. J. O'Brien (Labour, Wcstland), in his speech in the Budget debate to-day.
Whenever requests were made to the Government for more to be done for the unemployed, said Mr. O'Brien, Ministers said that the fund could not stand it, yet the Unemployment Board finished the year with a credit balance of £1,333,000.
Mr. J. A. Nash (Government, Palmerston North): What about the commitments?
Mr. O'Brien agreed that there were commitments, but against them were the taxation receipts to come in. It had been proved ovor and over again that the revenue had kept up, but the Government held back that large amount of money while people were in dire distress. Ail expenditure of half the amount of the credit balance would have cased the position. The figures published in the Budget ought to make the community blush with shame that the Government had saved such a large amount of money while people were suffering such privation and want. I
