CHRISTCHURCH CARNIVAL.

SUM RAISED EXCEEDS» £15,000.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The amount raised for the relief of distress in the city by the Metropolitan Queen Carnival, £15,223, and the name of the winning queen, Mrs. A. L. Cropp, representing the manufacturers' and the industrial group, were announced this afternoon to a large audience in the Civic Theatre.

The total held by the city treasurer shortly before 3 p.m. to-day was £11,555. Between that time and 4.15 p.m., when the final figures were announced, the balance was paid by representatives of the seven groups. It included the sum of £280, the amount for which the coronation chair was sold to the highest bidder, Mr. J. R. McKenzie.

The final order of the queens was: Mrs. A: L. Cropp (manufacturers' and industrial), Mrs. J. R. McKenzie (racing and trotting), Mrs. Herbert Hill (commerce and Public Service), Mrs. Kenneth Ballantyne (retailers'). Other candidates were Mrs. Ernest Boulton (licensed victuallers, wholesalers and commercial travellers'), Miss Joan Cunningham (professions), and Miss Betty Cotterill (sports).
