WORKMAN CRUSHED.
FATALITY AT GASWORKS.. RETORT FALLS OFF TROLLEY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Tuesday. An employee at the brickworks of Thomas Todd and Sons, Limited, Waikiwi, Mr. Thomas Henderson, was killed this afternoon when he was struck down by a heavy gas retort. Mr. Henderson, who was (10 years of age, was married. The accident occurred .when Mr. Henderson and two fellow' workmen were shifting a gas retort through the door of the moulding room at the brickworks. The retort was one of a number being manufactured for use at the gasworks and weighed Bcwt. It was of semi-cylindrical shape, measuring sft in height and 3ft across, and was manufactured of fireclay.
As the men were transporting it on a narrow ~ trolley, Mr. Henderson, who was pushing from behind, was suddenly struck 011 the head by the retort as it toppled backward. He was bending down and received the full force of the retort, which broke into pieces. Death was practically instantaneous.
