BEACH RESERVE.

CONTROL BOARD SUGGESTED. SELF-GOVERNMENT PROPOSAL. (By TelogTaph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. A circular letter in the form of a noting paper, without any signature ittached, has been posted to lessees of sections at the Waihi Beach reserve, isking whether they are in favour of leceding from the Waihi Borough Coun:il and forming a Waihi Beach Board to take over all liabilities and full con;rol of beach affairs. It is stated in ;he that the population has sufficiently increased to warrant selfgovernment, and that the revenue now ixceeds £1000 per annum. For these •easons, the letter suggests, better control would be exercised and revenue ipent to better purpose by the estabishment of a board. It is stated on behalf of the council, lowever, that the promoters of the novement have apparently not taken nto consideration certain vital factors ivhicih materially affect the position, iuch as the maintenance of the beach ■oad, and which would indicate an all•onnd increase in rates and rents should i town board be formed. The council ias effected considerable improvement ,o the beach road, has laid down tennis :ourts and children's playgrounds, and nany other improvements, and has built rp a substantial sinking fund to meet ;he original loan of £6000. Since ac|uiring the beach reserve (freehold) in .922 the council has advanced and spent m the property £1564 over and above ;he revenue collected from the beach to tfarch 31 last. The road has cost the •atepayers of Waihi since 1022 the sum >f £5654 to bring it to its present good (tandard. On a conservative estimate, it is subnitted, the council, if it did decide to lell, would require about £12,000 for ts equity in the reserve. Assuming ;hat this would be the price, the minijium expenditure would amount annuilly to £1210 (including interest and sinking fund, £690), and the revenue is at present would not be sufficient to jalanco t/he budget, which would mean in increase in rents and rates. Though the question has not yet come before the council officially, the expressed views of some of the lessees are igainst the proposal. The matter will arobably come up for consideration at ihe monthly meeting of the council this jvening.
