LEAGUE'S FUNDS.
MR. BRUCE ON USES.
Publishing of Historical Works Opposed.
AUSTRALIAN'S VIEWS. (United X'.A.—Electric Telegraph-Copyright) (Received 1 p.m.) GENEVA, September 20. The Australian delegate to tho League of Nations, Mr. Stanley Bruce, speaking before the Political Committee, strongly opposed the Argentine proposal that the League should publish a collection o£ ethnological historical works dealing with the origins of American civilisation. Mr. Brucc said the League was not tho proper medium for publication of such things when certain countries were not paying their contributions. Mr. Bruce continued that Australia fully sympathised with intellectual cooperation, especially inculcating into youth an understanding of other nations. Nevertheless, his opposition to spending League funds on publication of historical works applied equally to the proposal to translate a collection of European classics. The object was admirable, but it was a matter for the Governments interested, for educational institutions and private bodies.
Senor Costa del Reis (Bolivia) announced that he would ask his Government to make a financial giant for tlio purpose of historical publications. Ho realised the danger of developing a purely mechanical and materialistic Civilisation.
