General entries for the Auckland Racing; Club's spring meeting, to be held at Ellerslie on October 12 and 14, and first forfeits for the Great Northern Guineas and Welcome Stakes, show a substantial increase. Nominations for the 14 handicap events total 410, compared with 328, an increase of 88, and there are 39 remaining in the two classic races, ngainst 27, an increase of 12. The aggregate for the 10 races is thus 455. compared with 355, an increase of 100. The question as to what is the most suitable and acceptable trophy for a race l S c-. a I 7 ia ty;? r frequent occurrence (says 'Sentinel' in the Otago "Daily Times' 1 ). It is a matter of opinion, but the most suitable presentation for some in control of racing would be an alarm clock to wake them up to the fact that the days of autocratic control are over. Not so very long ago an owner discussed the important question of traveling expenses with the secretary of a racing club. The reply the owner received was: "We don't want you; we can do without you." Can anyone imagine a more autocratic and tactless reply to an owner-trainer of eight or ten horses?
