W.C.T.U. CONVENTION.
At:the close of the afternoon session of the W.O.T.U. convention yesterday, a combined, tea was held at the Y.W.C.A. cafeteria. This was followed by a roundtable conference, presided over by Mrs. Xasper. The meeting was addressed by Mrs. A. J. Stallworthy, and by Rev. G. E. Moreton, secretary of the Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society. Both addresses were of a very inspiring character and were highly appreciated by all present. In her address Mrs. Stallworthy reviewed the past, and brought before the notice of the audience the privileges that we enjoy because of the labours of the great stalwarts of the temperance movement in past years. These privileges include the absence of hotels from Auckland suburbs, introduction of six o'clock closing, ancl the abolition of barmaids. Mrs. Stallworthy closed her address with an impassioned appeal to her hearers to emulate the spirit of the noble leaders of the past in thi3 righteous cause.Mr. Moreton gave a very interesting account of the work done for the discharged prisoners, and roused in his hearers a profound admiration for his wonderful Christian spirit shown in dealing with those loss fortunate than ourselves. He pointed out how women can show practical sympathy in this humanitarian work by gifts of clothing, cakes, etc., to be used in the interests of the dependents of prisoners. During the evening a solo was rendered by Mrs. Lewis. KOHI.-ST. HELIER'S BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Kolii.-St. Helier's branch of W.C.T.U. was held at the Koliimarama Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, when a fair number of members attended. The president, Mrs. Kasper, gave an address in which she referred to the speecli of Mr. McAdam Eccles, that alcohol was not a stimulant but a narcotic drug.
