MARRIED TEACHERS.
CANTERBURY WOMEN. NO WORK TO BE SUPPLIED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. No change will be made in the policy of the Canterbury Education Board under which married women cannot be appointed to teaching positions. An effort to alter the position was made at to-day's meeting of the board when Mr. R. Wild moved that the resolution two years ago to that effect be rescinded. After discussion the motion was lost. Members supporting the motion declared that if carried it would give the opportunity of employment to married women now in distressed circumstances. Mr. C. S. Thomson, the chairman, declared that extreme hardship was the only reason that would justify the appointment of married women, and quoted cases where women in distressed circumstances were unable to be given teaching positions.
