CITY SHOWS. Film entertainment in the city this evening will consist of the following programmes:—Civic and Plaza jointly, new technicolour romantic film "Becky Sharp," starring Miriam Hopkins; Majestic, authentic film version of stirring adventure novel, "Oil For the Lamps of China," starling Pat O'Brien and Josephine Hutchinson; St. James', Jean Harlow and William Powell co-starred in dancing romance, "Reckless"; Regent, extended season of Arliss' historical romance, "Cardinal Richelieu"; Roxy and Tivoli jointly, "Spring Tonic," hilarious farce, and "Village Tale," small-town romantic drama; National and Prince Edward jointly, George Raft in "Stolen Harmony and Bette Davis, George Brent and Ann Dvorak ia "Housewife"; and Strand, revival of musical comedy success, "Roberta." "THE GIPSY ROVER." The Howick Pakuranga Musical Society presented an enjoyable musical comedy last evening in the Howick Theatre, entitled "The Gipsy Rover," by May and John Dodge. The story of The Gipsy Rover" is not a new one. Its plot surrounds the abduction ot a child belonging to a titled English family, and hie ultimate return when he had reached maturity. A delightful romance is woven into the story. The producer was Mr. Norman Day. The chorus work was attractive. Costuming and stage settings were an outstanding success. The colour scheme was exceptionally good. Mr. Day also acted as musical A small orchestra, led by Mr. Havdn Murray, with Mrs. Norman Day at the piano, was a popular feature of the production. The outstanding players were Mrs. F. R. Finlay, who played Lady Constance; Miss M. Sutherland, in the part of Zara; Mrs. C. Farquliar, as Nina: Mr. Parnell, as Lord Craven. Mrs. H. Tatton was solo danseuse. Mr. S. Overton had an important part to play in the character of Rob. A large chorus was presented. A feature of the production was a children s ballet, an adult ballet also performing well. Ihe funds of the society should be well augmented by this presentation, and it is intended to stage "The Gipsy Rover in other districts.
