IMPROVED TONE.
EMPLOYMENT IN FACTORIES. SOME ADOPT FIVE-DAY WEEK. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The improved tone of factory employment has been well maintained during the year, states the Labour Department's annual report. There were over 8000 factories in 1929, but this number rapidly declined, and an increase of 302 last year brings the total to 15,900, with 93,092 persons employed, an increase during the year of 7624.
"The increases no£ed," adds the report, "are attributable in some cases tc the exchange rate, which operated to foster several manufacturing trades, and in other cases to the effect of schemes introduced in connection with relief of unemployment, notably in the granting of building subsidies." Several additional factories have adopted the five-day week, and there arc 38 factories with 900 employees now working under this system.
There has been a special investigation in Auckland into the use of injurious Bolvents in the millinery trade. Samples of sprays and paints used for straw hats have been taken for analysis, and the report is now being awaited.
