The spring racing campaign in the South Island will be commenced at Ash burton to-morrow, when stroug fields, larger and of better quality than usual,, will be Been in action. The presence of 'eleven New Zealand Cup candidates will give great interest to the racing, as they include the best of the Riccarton aspirants for the two-mile race. The programme includes a new event, the John Grigg Stakes, which will be the first two-year-old event of the season in the South Island. The majority of the juveniles will be drawn from Riccarton stables, and they seem an even lot. The following liorsos may be fancied: — Longbeach.
