PENWOMEN'S CLUB.
Mr. 0. N. Cillespie lectured at a recent meeting on "Authors' Week." He explained that it was proposed to hold an "Authors' Week ,, simultaneously at tho leading towns of New Zealand about the end of February or beginning of March next. The idea of the movement was that- the people, should become better acquainted with their own literature. New Zealand was a. book-buying country. A reasonably good English novel does not sell as many copies in England as the New Zealand edition will. It was the desire of the organisers to create interest in work that was published iri New Zealand. In the eyes of the world the New Zealand scientist had a special niche. We had produced twenty at least with the faculty of writing text books in such perfect prose that they become works of art, among them Johannes Anderson (Bird Life), ■Eldon Best and Beagleholc. The four chief centres would have a display of New Zealand literature during "Authors' Week," and also story-writing and playwriting competitions would be held. Mrs. Can* Kollet. president of the club, presided and thanked the speaker for his address, which was of special interest to members. Mrs. C. M, Rattray recited Masefield's "Laugh And Be Merry." The gardening circle held a spring flower show the same afternoon, when prizes were awarded as follows:— Decorated bowl, Mrs. Shultz 1,. Miss Melville 2; decorated basket, Miss Melville; anemones, Mrs. Armstrong 1, Mrs. Stuart Boyd, 2; daffodils, Mrs. Armstrong.
