OBITUARY.

MR. JAMES W. WILSON. Born at Seaham Harbour, Durham, 80 years ago Mr. James William Wilson has" died at Huntly. He came to New Zealand 41 years ago, and settled at Huntly. For 10 years Mr. Wilson was engineer to the Taupiri Coal Mines till 1909 when with his son-in-law he established the business of Wilson and Law, and retired in 1920. In his earlier years in Huntly Mr. Wilson was keenly interested in local affairs. His wife died in 1911S, and one daughter survives.

MRS. EMILY S. PEARCE

At the age of 85 years Mrs. Emily Sarah Pearce, wife of Mr. Geo. Pcarce, Rautangi Road, Mount Eden, has died. She was born in Tasmania, and was taken by her parents to Melbourne. When Rhe was five years old Mrs. Pearce camo to Russell, Bay of Islands. Her father, the late Captain Thomas Wing, who had been making extensive surveys of many Xew Zealand harbours, was tnen in command of a vessel trading to Mauritius and his wife was left very much alone to the bringing up of her family amid the stirring times of early Xew Zealand colonisation. Captain Wing was appointed harbourmaster at Maniffeau Heads in 1858, and during the Maori war the family passed through trying experiences. In 1863 the family witnessed the wreck of H.M.S. Orpheus at Manukau Heads, when 181 lives were lost. In 1574 she married Mr. R. M. .Wallie fourth son of the late Rev. James Wallis, who arrived in New Zealand as a Methodist missionary in 1834. They took up their residence in Auckland, where they attended the Grafton Road Church for 40 years. Mr. Wallis died in 1920. Some years later his widow married Mr. George Pearce, of Taranaki, who survives her. Mrs. Pearce was always deeply interested in social and temperance work. She leaves, three sons and two daughters—Mrs. H. H. Pollnrd and Mrs. J. Wilson and Captain Alan Wallis, of the steamer Rona, and Messrs. Fletcher and Philip Wallis, of Auckland.
