FIRE ON PLATFORM.

SINGER SLIGHTLY BURNED. TOWN HALL SENSATION. (By Telegraph. —rrcss Association.) _ WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Some excitement was caused by a lire that occurred on the stage of the Town Hall early this afternoon on the course of the Wellington Competitions Society's festival. The flames, which destroyed a curtain, were speedily extinguished. The men's operatic solo event was in prosress at the time, and Mr. R. Cowie, of 'Wellington, was on the stage. The lirst warning cry came from members of the audience, who were in a better position to sec the smoke than were the competitors and others who were waitin" behind the scenes. The flames were rapidly consuming the curtain when Mr. Cowie rushed to it and, assisted by other men, pulled it down and used it in beating out the fire Scorch marks on the floor and steps of the stage testified to the brief heat of the flames. Mr. Cowie suffered slight burns.
