ROTORUA GOLF.

TOURNAMENT OPENS. TITLE-HOLDER GOES TO 18TH. BRINSDEN DEFEATED. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") ROTOBUA, this day. The first sound of the Eotorua golf championship and Thermal Cup was played this morning. A baffling crosswind penalised any wayward shots, otherwise the conditions were excellent. The majority of the matches were decisively won. with a few close tussles. Seifert, the title-holder, had a close call, while Brinsden was defeated after two' extra holes had been played. darken had plenty of opportunities early against Seifert. whose golf was then scratchy, and the Kotorna player should have had a better lead than 2 up at the .seventh. This Seifert wiped off in the next two holes and the pair, were still square at the eleventh. Seifer then won three holes on end, only to see Clarken retaliate with three successive 3's by sound putting, and square the game. Thus they went to the eighteenth all square, darkens second over-ran the green to the footpath and he could not hole a sevenfooter to keep the game alive. The Glendowie player, Hutchison, sprang a surprise on Goss by taking the opening three holes, but after three more Goss had squared the game. Erom this on the Wanganui player had the advantage. Lusk found the strong wind trying in his game with a much-improved local player, Monk. He prevailed comfortably in the end, but will have a tough opponent in G. Coltman this afternoon. Coltman always had the advantage over his opponent, Kettle, after getting a birdie 2 at the second hole. A 3 at the thirteenth by the Akarana competitor was another bit of brilliance. One of the soundest rounds of the morning was that of G. Tallis, who overshadowed the veteran Imlay Saunders (Wanganui). In the concurrent bogey Tallis was 1 Tip with 3 to play, but lost the lot. Tallis is finding trouble on the greens consistently, this marring otherwise fine golf. Tiie defeat of Brinsden by Bateman, a 7 handicap player from Tauranga, was unexpected. It was a prolonged duel, terminating at the twentieth. Here Bateman got the three. Brinsden was not putting well, but had the advantage most of the way, being one to the good at the sixteenth. At the eighteenth Bateman squared the match, halved the nineteenth in 4 and took the next and 1 the match.
