Mr. J. H. Scullin Resigns Owing To 111-health. SUCCESSOR MENTIONED. (Received 9.30 a.Hi.) MELBOURNE, this day. Mr. J. H. Scullin, leader of the official Labour Opposition in the Commonwealth Parliament, .has tendered his resignation of that office owing to indifferent health. It is regarded as
certain that liis successor will be Mr. Francis Michael Forde, member for Capricornia, Queensland, who has been deputy leader of the party since 1931.
James Henrv Scullin was Prime Minister of Australia from 1929-31. A Melbourne grocer, he entered politics in 1910, when he was elected to Canberra for Corangainitc, Victoria. Ho lost his seat three years later, but in 1922 was re-elected. He gained fame as a debater, and on the retirement of Mr. Charlton in 1928 was elected leader of the Labour party. Becoming Prime Minister at the general election the following year, he was appointed a Privy Councillor. He attended the Imperial Conference in London in 1930. His Government was defeated in the general election of November 25, 1931, by the Nationalist party, led by Mr. Lyons, the present Prime Minister, who was formerly a Labour Minister and deputy-leader of the Labour party. Mr. Scullin is 58 years of age.
