GOLF AT ROTORUA.
ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIP. GOSS LEADS QUALIFIERS. MALCOLM CARR UNLUCKY. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") ROTORUA, this day. The performance of one of the veterans of New Zealand golf, J. Goss, in heading the qualifying play in the Rotorua golf tournament was a mild surprise, except to those who were familiar with his recent form He headed the qualifying play at his club, Wanganui, recently, and in consequence his handicap was reduced from 4 to 2. Goss has a New Zealand amateur championship to his credit many years ago, but last year failed to quality at Rotorua. His return to form was very popular yesterday, and he reaped a due reward of excellent play. In addition to leading the field, he created an official record for the course with his 08 in the morning, and won the best gross and net trophies also. His play was good all round, and was capped off by sound putting. Another of the veterans, H. B. Lusk, was in the limelight in the morning, but did not appear to take the afternoon round very seriously, being assured of qualifying. Malcolm Carr, probably Rotorua's best medal player for several seasons, was on his game, and with a round of 70 in the morning (net 67) was unlucky to be runner-up to Goss in both the gross and net medal events. R. D. Wright, Auckland provincial champion and Auckland Club champion on several occasions some years back, struck his game again to-day. The form of L. Seifert (Miramar), last year's winner, and H. Brinsden (Titirangi) was disappointing, but both many do better in the match play. George Tallis (Titirangi) "has played his best golf at Rotorua, and again showed his liking for the course. In the morning round he stepped on to the last tee wanting a four for a 71. His tee shot found the fairway bunker, and he then got mixed up with the trees in front of the green, to take seven for the hole. In the afternoon he again played well and was one of the quintet to return cards of 75. The honours of the afternoon went to O. H. rWilliams (Palmerston North) with a round of 74,0ff a 4 handicap. The Rotorua player, L. Poole, runnerup to Seifert last year, did not fulfil expectations. An Auckland player who did well was Pat Coltman (Akarana). Several players prominent in practice during the week-end and on Monday, faded in the acid test yesterday. One of the most notable was V. Wells (Auckland), who broke 70 on Monday, and could not better 80 on Tuesday. T. Bloomfield (Waiuku) also failed to reproduce excellent practice play. The Maungakiekie player, J. Balgarnie, had. a nice round of 78—11 —67 in the afternoon to win the net medal trophy. Still another Aueklander to produce his best form was C. Knight, who was well up in the first 32. Alan Barns Graham (Titirangi), who has played little golf locally this season, was in excellent form, and may take a deciding part in the championship. He has still to reproduce his fine form of the New Zealand championship at Titirangi three years ago. A strong cross wind and tricky greens made the course difficult. List of players to qualify:—
