TO MAKE CROSSINGS SAFE.
A three-year plan- for the elimination of level crossings in the Dominion has been revealed by the Prime Minister. By the expenditure of £ 120,000 a year, shared mainly by the Highways Board, the Unemployment Board and the Railway Department, but with some assistance from local bodies, the Government hopes to remove the worst menace of the highway. Mr. Forbes is confident that the action proposed will be approved by the public. The public has demanded such action for long enough at crossings around Auckland. It is the Government that has been asleep. When the crossings marked out for attention this year are announced they should include a good sprinkling in the Auckland district, and particularly in the suburban area. Those at New Lynn, Southdown and Mangere Crossing are among the most urgent. Road improvements at these and other points have been held up awaiting Government action, and the scheme now taking shape should lead to considerable activity apart from the immediate crossings. Thus the scope for employment and the demand for materials and capital will be further increased.
