GOODS BY FRAUD.
CITY FIRM DECEIVED. DOMESTIC IMPRISONED. Myra Conway, a domestic, aged 28, who was convicted on August 17 on two charges of obtaining by fraud clothing and a variety of other articles, of the total value of £44 6/4 from a city department store, appeared before Mr. Wyvem Wilson, S.M., in the Police Court this morning for sentence. Mr. K. C. Aekins, in appealing for leniency, said Conway had been in custody on remand for nearly two weeks. She had a most unfortunate life, and when only 16 she was admitted to probation. He commented on the ease with which she obtained the goods. She was dressed then as she was in Court, yet she successfully represented that she was ordering them as a well-known woman in Remuera. Not only did she get the goods she ordered, but suitcases on two occasions to take them home in. "There certainly seems to be a screw loose in the credit system of this firm," said Mr. Wilson. Mr. Aekins said Conway was now living with her mother in Ponsonby. She could not explain why she committed the offences, and said that she did not realise what she had done until she returned to Morrinsville, where she was at that time working. Addressing Conway, Mr. Wilson said that every part of the story he had heard showed that she was a woman with a weak will power. "It seems to me there is a chance of reclaiming you and making you a useful member' of society if the proper steps are taken." he added. "A period of institutional control, where you will have to do what you are told, is what you require." . Conway was ordered to be detained for reformative purposes at Point Halswell for 12 months. j
