FLOOD DAMAGE.

HAURAKI DRAINAGE. PIAKO RIVER STOPBANK. HELP NEEDED FOB REPAIRS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. The Hauraki United Drainage Board met during the week-end, Mr. H. H. Hicks presiding. The foreman, Mr. W. A. Herkt, reported serious damage to many of the board's drains as the result of recent bad weather and high tides. Many farms were flooded and the bad state of the stopbank below Ngatea along the Piako River would cause serious flooding if repairs were not soon undertaken. For this work it was necessary that the board should receive outside assistance In rcfrartf i.o stopbanks on the Piako River the chairman was authorised to interview the Lands Department engineer at Kerepeehi. The board also decided to notify the Public Works Department at Paeroa that the raising of the stopbank around Huirau Point was insufficient to keep out the high tides which had recently been experienced, and that water was coming over in several places. The chairman was authorised to interview the Commissioner of Unemployment in Wellington next month in reference to obtaining financial assistance by way of a grant or subsidy on extraordinary expenditure incurred through flood damage and to obtain relief in the form of labour for completing the work which still/ had to be carried out. Mr. J. D. Robertson's request to put in a flat floodgate in the Huirau roadside drain to prevent flooding on his property from the Tekauri No. 1 drain was declined on the ground that no improvement would be effected thereby. In accordance with notice of motion it was agreed that rates as advertised be levied and that a rebate of 5 per cent be allowed on the amount of general rate. The three area members and the foreman were given power to act after inspecting the Wharepoa floodgate.
