DAVIS CUP GAMES. SURPRISE BY PAPATOETOE. WESLEY HARD PRESSED TO WIN. The Davis Cup matches advanced another stage at Remuera on Saturday, when some bright play was witnessed despite the tricky nature of the grounds. Wesley in an exciting game with Papatoetoe scored the day's honours with a four goals to three win. Mount Eden kept Somerville busy, but went under by four goals to two. An even first spell was fought between St. Luke's and University, but in the second half St. Luke's gained command and trounced the students by six goals to one. Competition ladder:— /— Goals. Cb. P. Eden 8 — 8 — 13 41 — EDEN'S SPLENDID STICKWORK. Mt. Eden advanced through the smart slick work of Oliver, and reached the circle edge, when Smith checked and Stewart cleared to Glanvilie. The rigntwing led an attack, and Liden conceded a corner that was blocked. The attack was continued, and E. Watts beat tue goalie. Somerville 1, Mt. Eden O. Smart work by Brown and J. Horspool shifted the scene to Somervnle's circie, when Smith cleared. Attacks by Somerville followed, one shot hitting the post, but Wellborne raced through to net. Somerville 2, Mt. Eden 0. Still the whites' pressed, and Irom close circle play Long netted. Somerville 3, Mt. Eden <J. Started by llajßoii, Ml. Eden then set up a series of, uttacks lor some time, until E. Watts secured and ran to the circle. Tangye came out and knocked clear. Continuing tne pressure, Bruithwaite netted. Somerville 4, Mt. Eden 0. Somerville were first awuy upon resuming, reaching the circle euge to be repulsed by Bowdcn, who hit to Brown. An attack by Mount Eden kept tne whites' defence busy until Stewart cleared, uud play hung in miUiield for u time. A loose rush down the right by Eden ended in Brown's shot being saved at the expense of a penalty corner, from which Hoispool netted. Somerville 4, Mount Eden 1. Encouraged by their success the Edenites kept Somerville hemmed down, ami only Deluhunly's goulkeeping saved the situation. From a loose rush led by Glanvilie uud Bruithwulte, Somerville gaiued a penalty corner. Watts' shot was blocked, uud Eden sent play to the quarter line. A hard drive to the circle was stopped by Deluhunty, who theu overran the bail, and Horspool being handy found the net. Somerville 4 Mount Eden 2 Messrs. H. Rankin and J. Foster umpired. LAST-MINUTE VICTORY. Papatoetoe opened play by carrying the uttack to Wesley's quarter, but their invuslou was short-lived. l'hillpolts was instrumental In changing the scene of operations, his two shots being unsuccessful. Maintaining the pressure Wesley opened their score when Neatc found the net seven minutes after the game hud started. Wesley 1, Papatoetoe U.
Papatoetoe rose to the occasion, and set up a determined onslaught on the Wesley goal. From a melee in the circle Airey saved brilliantly, but Monteith shot from the rebound, rauatoetoe 1, Wesley 1. Three minutes later Monteith found the net again, making Papatoetoe 2, Wesley 1. From a corner, Pupatoetoe were stubbornly defending, uud trom the melee Kiff scored. Puputoetoe 2, Wesley 2. Play swung from end to end at a fast pace until Wesley hud their opponents hemmed in for quite u spell, Chupmun and Neute being conspicuous. After the change over Wesley attacked strongly, but Kobinsou removed the dunger. Returning to the attack Chapman sent across u nice centre, uml Phllipotts hutl little difficulty in beating the goalie with a stinging shot. Wesley 3, Papa to toe Wesley continued to press, and Knight was responsible for two brilliunt saves. Cox made a spectacular run down the left fiauk, sent iu a beautiful centre, but the inside men missed a golden opportunity. Returning to Wesley's quarter Smytheman accepted a centre, and his shot beat Airey, to bring the score to Papatoetoe 3. Wesley 8. The greens strove hard to gain the ascendancy, their efforts being lewarded when Chapman found the net with a pretty wristy shot. Wesley 4, Papatoetoe 3. Wesley 4 I'apatoctoe 3 Messrs. G. Peace and H. Skinner umpired. UNIVERSITY TROUNCED. The game opened with St. Luke's advancing down the centre, but Halliwell proved. the stumbling block. Returning to the attack, University were forced to defend stubbornly. Good work by Corin and Grace saw the reds gain the circle, but KoriestBrown saved three hot shots in quick succession. 'Vurslty forwards swung down the line In formation, but could only force a corner. Play changed ends quickly, Vipond's shot being taken on the puds by ForrestBrown and cleared by Halliwell. Maintaining the pressure, 'Varsity had some hectic moments in their goal-mouth, the danger being eventually cleared. The blues took a turn at attack, forciug two corners, the second proving successful when A. Broun found the net. 'Varsity 1, St. Luke's 0. St. Luke's were first away after the change over, Halliwell clearing to the sideline. After a short spell of midliold play Alexander advanced down the right flank, centred nicely, and Fenton made no mistake with the shot. University 1, St. Luke's 1. After a shock attack by 'Varsity Alexander again gained the opponents' quarter, but Vipond's shot from the centre missed the posts. Grace was next seen in a solo effort, but his shot was taken on the pads by Forrest-Brown, u corner resulting. University were being hard pressed, St. Luke's forcing three unsuccessful corners in as many minutes. A. Broun got away and with Cooper advanced to the circle, where T. Clark relieved temporarily. Coriu was then 6een in u brilliant run for half the length of the field, only to be robbed of possession by Wilson. St. Luke's returned through the agency of Vipond, Forrest-Brown attempting to kick clear, but Grace got it ou the rebound and scored nicely. St. Luke's 2, University 1. The reds were goal hunting again and a few minutes later saw St. Luke's score again, making the score St. Luke's 3, University 1. 'Varsity, roused by this reverse, made a determined attack, but lacked finish in the circle. From a free hit Fenton gained the circle, drew the goalie, the shot hitting the post "and Grace, fallowing in, netted. St. Luke's 4, University 1. A couple more were added in as many minutes by Vipond. St. Luke's 6 University 1 Messrs. H. Watts and H. McQuarrie were the umpires.
