COLLEGE RUGBY.

TARANAKI TOURNEY. AUCKLAND WINS FIRST MATCH. (By Telegraph—Special to "Star.") NEW PLYMOUTH, Saturday. The most exciting college Rugby football seeu in New Plymouth for many years was witnessed this afternoon, when the quadrangular tournament was opened. Auckland Grammar beat New Plymouth High School by 13 to 11, and Otago beat Christchurch by 22 to 10. The first match was played at such a terrific pace that injuries were frequent, and Banks and Garrett (Grammar) and Bloxam (New Plymouth) were assisted from the field. Gilmore was the genius of the Grammar attack, scoring both tries and engineering many other movements which failed at Coughlan. Passinore converted both tries and kicked a penalty goal. Inder and Banks were the best of the forwards, being always ou the ball. New Plymouth had a territorial advantage all through the first half, but despite this Grammar put on eight points. By sharp thrusts Gilmore wove his way cleverly through the opposition for 25 yards. Marriott made many brilliant runs, following Interceptions, but never had sufficient support. Had they had opportunities both wings would have been dangerous. Gilmore joined with a forward rush early in the second spell, and in a wild scramble lor the ball as it rolled over the line he touched down. New Plymouth's first tries were by Corkill and Thomas, the former being converted by Larkin. Both came from scrambles after franitic forward bursts. The last try was most spectacular, when Ekdahl raced half the length of the field, bustled and swerved past Garrett and Coughlan, and scored in the corner. New Plymouth were unfortunate with two kicks at conversion striking the upright and with a penalty rebounding from the crossbar. Banks and Bloxam were later taken to hospital with concussion. HAWKE'S BAY BEATEN. MANAWATU FIVE POINTS UP. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NAPIER, this day. Hawke's Bay went down to Manawatu by a score of 17 points to 12 at McLean Park on Saturday. Mauawatu's combination was better, in spite of a strong gale that swept In gusts across the field. The home backs were repeatedly caught out of position, and the fast, heavy visiting forwards made the utmost of every chance which came as a result of mistakes by Hawke's Bay. The high wind gave Hawko's Bay trouble in the first spell, which saw the home side cross the Manawatu twenty-flve only three times. Although it had the wind in its favour in the second half Hawke's Bay made frequent mistakes. The game was confined largely to the forwards, and the visitors' pack had much the better of play, although Hawke's Bay gained most of the ball from the set scrums. In spite of the wind In the second spell, Manawatu held its advantage, and by mnking the game tight It succeeded jn increasing its margin of o—6 at half-time.
